PERSONAL: christmas break

I just returned from four days of cross-country skiing and relaxing in Banff. Here is what I documented with my iPhone while we were away. Enjoy! And a very happy new year to you all. Best,

CARMYN JOY

KALYNN+MATT: married

This was the loveliest autumn wedding. Thanks so much, K+M, for having me be a part of your day. It was such an honour. Kalynn, I have always appreciated, in particular, how supportive and encouraging you have been of my work. It is such a wonderful thing to continually receive positive feedback, and you have played a huge role in that. Thank you so very much.

I’d also like to mention that I shot this wedding with my exceptionally talented friend Talia Unger. While I didn’t post anything she produced from our time together (I’ll allow her to show off her own wonderful images on her blog), I’d love for you to check out her site, too. Thanks, Talia, for being such wonderful company and for providing Kalynn and Matt with some beautiful memories, as well.

Without further ado, here is what I saw on a fantastic day in September. Best,

CARMYN JOY

PERSONAL: hope mission

Although it’s a little hard to believe, it has been over five years now since I began working as a photographer within the Edmonton community, when, as a nineteen year-old, I nervously shot my first wedding with a rather mediocre SLR. Nearly fifty weddings and countless portrait sessions later, I’m still continually humbled by how my images have managed to impact the lives of those I’ve had the privilege to document. Recently, I have had the very exciting opportunity to utilize my photography for an even wider social dimension, as I began working for Edmonton’s Hope Mission in the fall. It’s been a phenomenal opportunity as I’ve gotten to document various facets of this not-for-profit organization for their communication’s department, such as their addiction recovery home, youth drop-in center, emergency shelter, housing facilities, and meal services. I’ve specifically spent the past couple of weeks documenting the Christmas dinners we have been serving on Monday evenings in December, where the atmosphere has been incredibly warm and celebratory. For those of you interested, I’d love to share more about this new development in my personal and professional life, and invite you to follow our Facebook group and Twitter feed if you would like to receive frequent updates, of which I will play often play part in.

To conclude, I’d like to leave you with a question: Where do the Hungry and Homeless go for Christmas?
As an answer to this question, I’d like to share a few of my images and a video (created by my good friend Brennan Black) that best encapsulates what we have been up to during this holiday season. I’d love for you to share these links with people you know, as I think it shows a side to the city that should be remembered, especially during the hype of this time of year. Many thanks, my friends. I so appreciate your support, as always.

COMING SOON: fall sessions

Although this blog has been looking pretty scarce lately, (oh, dear) I have still been keeping fairly busy with portrait sessions over the past few months. Unfortunately, I am only now able to get most of the editing done, as school had me in a bind for a while. (A million thanks to those clients who have been incredibly patient and understanding. I so appreciate you). In the meantime, I wanted to give you a little taste of what will make an appearance here shortly.

I am also starting to book up pretty nicely for the spring/summer wedding season, and am very excited about the people I will be working with. I thought this past summer would be impossible to top, but I am starting to seriously rethink that. ;)

I’ll have many more personal projects, in particular, that I’ll be working on in the new year. Thank you, my friends!

All best,

CARMYN JOY

PERSONAL: an educational accomplishment

My friends! I’ve done it. I have completed my Master’s degree. I apologize for severely neglecting this blog the past few weeks, but I was up to my neck in papers and books. However, I can assure you that I shall soon have some new material up to show you. Thanks for sticking with me! Hope you’re all well,

CARMYN JOY

P.S. Here’s a glimpse into my writing essentials, as I posted on InstaGram a couple of weeks ago. If you’d like to follow me, please do so! I try my best to post something interesting on a daily basis. It’s a good challenge. Username: carmynjoy.

MARISA+MATT: engaged

I LOVED this session from earlier this month. It is definitely one of my new favourites. I could rave for quite some time about how much I like these two and how much I am looking forward to shooting their picnic themed wedding in June. Marisa and Matt, it’s been such a pleasure getting to know you, and I feel very fortunate to be able to document these milestones for you. It’s wonderful to call you my new friends. :)

Best,

CARMYN JOY

BETH+DANNY: married

I got to spend a couple of hours with Beth+Danny earlier this month, photographing their intimate ceremony and celebration. It was the perfect fall day, and I enjoyed working with these two so very much. Thanks again, my friends. I am so glad that you enjoy the photographs; I had a great time taking them.

I hope everyone had a fun Halloweekend.

COMING SOON: marisa+matt

Marisa + Matt’s session with me resulted in some of my all-time favourite photos. I couldn’t have worked with better people. :) As soon as they’ve had a chance to look through them first, I’ll have a full post up. Hopefully, over the weekend some time! I cannot wait to share them with you. Have a happy Hallowe’en,

FAMILY PORTRAITS: introducing imogen

As I was driving over to Jana and Ian’s home to meet Imogen and take some portraits of this tiny new human being, I found myself in a contemplative mood. This post actually showcases the very first newborn portraits that I have taken, and that caused me to reflect on some of the more unique aspects of my job. When I met Jana in graduate school a year ago, she was merely a stranger in my class with cool style and a brilliant brain. As our semester unfolded, I came to really respect her as a scholar and friend, and that admiration has only broadened further as I’ve recently observed her take on a far more challenging role: that of a mother. I feel so fortunate to be able to document the life stages of people I know and care about. Thanks so much, Jana and Ian, for allowing me to take these for you. What a beautiful girl.
