STEFANIE+TRAVIS: married

Just over a month ago, I had the privilege of photographing Stef and Travis’ beautiful spring wedding at Fort Edmonton Park.
It was a lovely affair! Thanks so much, you two. I had a great time working with you and getting to know you both.

Look out for many more posts in the near future. I’ve been a busy gal.

FIRST LOOK: justina+josh

I shot my second wedding of the season today, and it was a great success! The conditions couldn’t have been more perfect outside, and Justina and Josh have a wonderful sense of aesthetics. (As my future reception photographs will showcase. I doubt the Yellowhead Brewery has ever looked nicer). Thanks so much, Justina and Josh, for asking me to be a part of your day in this capacity! Looking forward to having the rest of your images to you soon.

Hope everyone is having a lovely weekend,

CARMYN JOY

COMING SOON: spring sessions

I’ve been hard at work, editing some wonderful sessions over the past couple of weeks, and I am excited to share them with you. Here’s what you should look for on my blog in the near future.

Thanks so much, my friends!

CARMYN JOY

(The grand opening of a very cool new music venue in Edmonton, Stef and Travis’ lovely spring wedding at Fort Edmonton, a very fun stagette party I helped plan, and Fiona and James’ engagement portraits.)

GRADUATION PORTRAITS: michela

A couple of weeks ago, I met up with my friend Michela to take some portraits for her — in commemoration of her high school graduation. It was a gorgeous day, and we had a really fun time working together. Thanks so much, Michela, for spending part of your afternoon with me, and for all of your encouraging words.

If any other graduates are interested in booking a session with me, I’ve included information here. Feel free to email me with any questions you might have at info@carmynjoy.com. I really look forward to hearing from you!

Hope everyone has been having a great week, thus far. All best,

CARMYN JOY

GRADUATION PORTRAITS: pricing information

 Upload from April 26, 2012

For an example session, please see Michela’s portraits.

Just a note: I am heading out on a week-long roadtrip tomorrow and may therefore be a little slower to reply. However, I really look forward to hearing from you, and will respond as soon as I am able to. :) Please use my email address, and not Facebook, as the site often filters messages from individuals I am not FB friends with, and I do not receive them. Many thanks!

FIRST LOOK: fiona+james

On the most beautiful day of the season yet, I had the pleasure of meeting Fiona and James to take their engagement photos. Here are a few previews, until I can get at the rest. What a wonderful afternoon, and what a lovely couple to spend it with.

Many thanks! I hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend,

CARMYN JOY

P.S. On an unrelated note, if you’re from Edmonton and you’ve got nothing to do tomorrow night, perhaps I can interest you in what will be a great evening. I’ll be performing five original songs, with a small folk band, tomorrow night at Wunderbar. And - trust me - when I say that the acts to follow are really phenomenal. The show starts at 8:30, and tickets are first come, first serve, at the door.

FIRST LOOK: michela

Today, I had the privilege of taking my friend Michela’s high school graduation portraits. It was an absolutely beautiful day, and we had a great time traipsing through the mud to get these photographs. What a photogenic beauty! More to come from this session in the next week. As well, I’ll be creating a blog post with pricing information on sessions such as these for those graduates looking for an alternative to studio portraits. Happy Monday!

PERSONAL: a big announcement

Upload from April 12, 2012

Today, I have a rather big public announcement to make! I wanted to wait a while to ensure that my close friends knew this news before I announced it to the rest of the internet world; however, the time has now come to share it with the rest of you. :)

As of the end of August, I will be moving to Ottawa, ON for two years in order to attend an extremely unique and exciting photography school — The School of Photographic Arts: Ottawa. Although I have undoubtedly learned a lot about photography through practice, experience, and self-education, there’s still so much more that I’d like to explore and gain in my knowledge of. This school works primarily in black and white film - and with medium format cameras - so I’ll be learning a very old craft that I’ll certainly be able to apply to digital work, as well.

While I’ll continue to happily shoot weddings and portraits in the future, because I enjoy that part of my life - above all, I am looking forward to how these next couple of years will allow me to discover who I am as an artist. Not necessarily an artist that works to capture events for other people, but as a creator who is able to attribute something of greater social significance to society. I want my viewers to think crticially about the world, to discover something new, to be challenged. I want my art to say something worthwhile. And I want to combine my love for writing and literature with my passion for visual material in my future career. Because the last six years of my life have primarily been consumed by other studies and trying to make ends meet with various jobs, I haven’t been able to really spend time on what photography personally means for me, and work on the kinds of projects I’d like to involve myself in. I am excited to discover exactly how all of this is going to unfold, and I can’t wait to document this journey with you all.

With all of this being said, I am definitely able to travel back to Alberta to continue to shoot (a limited amount of) weddings throughout the year, so don’t forget about me here. :) As well, (and this is where you can also come in), I will definitely be looking to grow my client base out in Ontario; so, should you know of anyone that needs the services of a photographer like myself from approximately September 2012-April 2014, please keep me in mind! I would be forever grateful.

If you’re from Edmonton and would like portraits taken with me, this summer might be the best opportunity for me to do so, so please keep that in mind. I still have a decent amount of availability during weekdays in June and July, especially.

Thanks so much, all of you, for your continued support and encouragement. It’s a huge reason as to why I keep pursuing this aspect of my life. All the very best,

CARMYN JOY

P.S. If you would like to learn more about SPAO, the school I will be attending, you can visit their website here. (Currently, the portfolio program I will be attending is undergoing changes on the site and has been removed altogether, temporarily. However, it will still give you a general idea as to what past students have produced, as well as the philosophy of the institution).

P.P.S. I sumbitted a portfolio for the program a few months ago, and it’s still up online, should you like to take a look. It was supposed to highlight my photographic abilities, as well as my capacity to think creatively. I rather like what I was able to come up with, and am so thankful for all of the positive feedback I received on it. It was overwhelming, to be honest! I have the most amazing people in my life. xx

PERSONAL: everyday squares

As many of you probably know, I am a big fan of Instagram (my username is “carmynjoy,” should you care to follow), and I have been faithfully documenting my life with my iPhone 4 since I signed up a year ago. I used to be much more diligent in sharing those captures here, on my blog, but have recently fallen behind. I uploaded some of my iPhone photography from the past couple of months on my Facebook page this afternoon, and thought it’d be easiest to simply give you a link to that, if you’re interested in getting a little glimpse into my daily adventures.
