Today, I have a rather big public announcement to make! I wanted to wait a while to ensure that my close friends knew this news before I announced it to the rest of the internet world; however, the time has now come to share it with the rest of you. :)
As of the end of August, I will be moving to Ottawa, ON for two years in order to attend an extremely unique and exciting photography school — The School of Photographic Arts: Ottawa. Although I have undoubtedly learned a lot about photography through practice, experience, and self-education, there’s still so much more that I’d like to explore and gain in my knowledge of. This school works primarily in black and white film - and with medium format cameras - so I’ll be learning a very old craft that I’ll certainly be able to apply to digital work, as well.
While I’ll continue to happily shoot weddings and portraits in the future, because I enjoy that part of my life - above all, I am looking forward to how these next couple of years will allow me to discover who I am as an artist. Not necessarily an artist that works to capture events for other people, but as a creator who is able to attribute something of greater social significance to society. I want my viewers to think crticially about the world, to discover something new, to be challenged. I want my art to say something worthwhile. And I want to combine my love for writing and literature with my passion for visual material in my future career. Because the last six years of my life have primarily been consumed by other studies and trying to make ends meet with various jobs, I haven’t been able to really spend time on what photography personally means for me, and work on the kinds of projects I’d like to involve myself in. I am excited to discover exactly how all of this is going to unfold, and I can’t wait to document this journey with you all.
With all of this being said, I am definitely able to travel back to Alberta to continue to shoot (a limited amount of) weddings throughout the year, so don’t forget about me here. :) As well, (and this is where you can also come in), I will definitely be looking to grow my client base out in Ontario; so, should you know of anyone that needs the services of a photographer like myself from approximately September 2012-April 2014, please keep me in mind! I would be forever grateful.
If you’re from Edmonton and would like portraits taken with me, this summer might be the best opportunity for me to do so, so please keep that in mind. I still have a decent amount of availability during weekdays in June and July, especially.
Thanks so much, all of you, for your continued support and encouragement. It’s a huge reason as to why I keep pursuing this aspect of my life. All the very best,
P.S. If you would like to learn more about SPAO, the school I will be attending, you can visit their website here. (Currently, the portfolio program I will be attending is undergoing changes on the site and has been removed altogether, temporarily. However, it will still give you a general idea as to what past students have produced, as well as the philosophy of the institution).
P.P.S. I sumbitted a portfolio for the program a few months ago, and it’s still up online, should you like to take a look. It was supposed to highlight my photographic abilities, as well as my capacity to think creatively. I rather like what I was able to come up with, and am so thankful for all of the positive feedback I received on it. It was overwhelming, to be honest! I have the most amazing people in my life. xx
