RACENE+SAM: married

This past Saturday, on one of the warmest days of the summer, I had the honour of photographing Racene and Sam’s urban flavoured wedding. Thank you so much, Racene, Sam, and company for making me feel welcome and right at home. It was a privilege to get to know you.

Here are a few highlights from the day. Best,

CARMYN JOY

NAOMI+AMMANUEL: part one

Way back in May, I had the honour of photographing the wedding of a dear friend of mine - a wedding that has ended up being my all-time favourite. Naomi and Ammanuel truly allowed their unique style and personality to show through every aspect of the day, and I honestly couldn’t be more excited to finally share these photos with you. Here is part one, of two blogs posts, that I’ll dedicate to their fantastic wedding. Look for the second post on Tuesday, a week from today. Enjoy!

AARON+TARA: first look

What was supposed to be a manageable, seven hour commute from Quebec City back to Edmonton for me on Friday ended up being a seventeen hour ordeal - thanks to Air Canada and its “fantastic” service. I finally got home yesterday morning, literally spent half an hour gathering equipment at my house, and headed straight to Tara’s hotel to begin the day’s documentation. Despite the weekend’s tiring misadventures, I found myself genuinely alert and engaged during the entire wedding, and had a truly phenomenal time. I stayed late into the night, cutting a rug on the dance floor, and could not be happier that I got to celebrate with my friends.

Thank you so much, Aaron and Tara, for your constant enthusiasm regarding my work, and for trusting my artistic vision yesterday. Even when we pulled up to the location I had chosen - only to find the entrance was blocked by a newly materialized, rain-fed swamp - this entire wedding party was willing to find an alternative way into the area. Even if it meant trecking through a field in high heels and warding off swarms of bugs. Tara, you were by far the most adventurous bride I have ever photographed - climbing into places I would have been incredibly hesitant to suggest. And I absolutely loved that.

It was really hard to only choose a few photos to showcase today, but I shall definitely have a full post up of this occasion in just a few weeks. Thanks again, A+T. I wish you a fantastic trip to Italy. And I hope you’re not flying with Air Canada.

PERSONAL: living in quebec city, part one

I have been studying French in Quebec City with some close friends for the past five weeks, and I shall be sad to leave this beautiful place on Friday. When I look around this city, it’s often hard to believe that I am still in Canada.

Here’s part one of a two posts I’ll produce on my time here.

JEN: documenting a swedish graduation, part two

As promised, here are some more photographs of Jen’s graduation celebration in Sweden. If you have not already, please read more about Scandinavia’s unique graduation traditions, as well as my fantastic time in this country with Jen and her family, in my previous post (http://carmynjoyblog.myfotojournal.com/2011/jun/23/jen-swedish-graduation-party/).

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend!
Best,

ANNA: graduation portraits in finland

As I mentioned in a previous post, while visiting some family friends in Finland and Sweden a few weeks ago, I was able to take graduation photos for the high school graduates in those respective families. While I’ve already blogged a little about my session with Jen and Scandinavian graduation traditions (http://carmynjoyblog.myfotojournal.com/2011/jun/23/jen-swedish-graduation-party/), nevertheless, I have not showcased many of my photos from either of those two sessions. Today, I present to you Anna: a wonderful young lady that my sister and I got to know two years ago when she partook in a Rotary exchange in our hometown of Edmonton. She warmly welcomed us into their gorgeous, one-hundred year-old home - situated in a rural area framed by incredible forests, quintessential red-stained farm houses, and the Baltic Sea - and we had such a phenomenal time getting to know the rest of her family.

Anna, we loved exploring your city, learning more about Finland and its culture, and getting to see you and celebrate with you.

Have a wonderful Monday, everyone, and stay tuned for a post with Jen’s graduation photos in the near future, as well as personal photos from my time in both Finland and Sweden.

CARMYN JOY

P.S. I sure wish our graduation hats were sailor caps! Way too awesome.

PERSONAL: facebook page update

For all those who have become a “fan” of my company page on Facebook:

First of all, I don’t think I quite express my gratitude towards you often enough. So, please, allow me to do that right now. Your many comments, kind messages, and overall encouragement means more than I could express over a simple blog post or FB reply. Over the past couple of years, I have watched my business grow to a place that I never anticipated or expected would be possible, and I feel incredibly privileged and happy to have the opportunity to continue working in a field that I genuinely enjoy, am challenged by, and gain inspiration and satisfaction from.

All of this being said, despite the fact that I really love receiving comments and instant feedback on the photos I upload on FB, I have decided that it’s irresponsible of me to ignore FB’s poor copyright policies any longer. From now on, rather than uploading the majority of my photos on to FB, I will simply showcase one or two “teasers,” and redirect you to the rest of that particular session here, on this blog. Because your feedback really does mean a lot to me, it would be lovely to still receive comments, so please don’t be shy! It’s not difficult to leave one on this blog platform.

In the near future, I have a couple of very exciting weddings that I will be uploading. Because I have been traveling so, so much this summer, it’s been difficult to keep on top of blogging. But I promise these two weddings will be worth the wait. Additionally, look for some more personal photos from my time in Finland, Sweden, and, most recently, Quebec City.

Thanks so much again! I am full of gratitude. Best,

CARMYN JOY

ELAINA+MATT: first look

A little over a month ago, I had the privilege of documenting the beautiful wedding of two friends of mine in Kelowna. Both Elaina and Matt have phenomenal taste, so I knew that the aesthetics of this celebration would be fantastic. And, as to be expected, they certainly did not disappoint! The majority of this marriage consisted of handmade, one-of-a-kind items, affording the bride and groom’s personality and style to really come through in every aspect of the day. They were wed by a huge tree, held their reception in an incredible restored packing plant, and led me to fields and buildings that would excite and inspire any photographer.

I already posted a few favourites on my Facebook fan page, so please feel free to puruse about a dozen other images there. Additionally, please “like” my page for frequent updates that don’t always make it on to this blog. http://www.facebook.com/carmynjoyphotography

Thanks so much!

Finally, I should have a full post of this wedding up in a few weeks. I’m very excited to share these images with you. Thanks again, E+M, for putting on such a great party, and for allowing me to be part of it.

PERSONAL: quebec city

I have been living at Universite Laval in Quebec City for two weeks now in order to take part in a French exchange program. I have three weeks left in this amazing place, and I plan to take full advantage of the remaining time. It’s been such a phenomenal experience already, and I’m looking forward to collecting more great memories in the near future.

On a beautiful June day, I met Jackelyn and her three lovely children.
Here were the results of that morning.

Thank you so much, Jackelyn! It was truly an honour to take these for you.
